Help
Getting started, game day, and moving things between devices.
Install DugOut on your tablet
Open dugoutapp.online/app in your tablet's browser, then add it to your home screen:
- Android (Chrome): tap the menu (three dots), then Install app or Add to home screen.
- iPad or iPhone (Safari): tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
Open it from the home screen icon from then on. After the first visit it works with no internet, so it's fine at grounds with poor reception.
Your information is saved in that browser on that device. Private or incognito browsing doesn't keep it, so don't use DugOut in a private tab.
Set up your team
- Tap the cog to open Settings, then open Teams and players.
- Add each player with their name, a nickname for the field board, and their number.
- Optionally, open Position ratings and mark positions as preferred (★) or avoid (⚠). These show when you pick players and guide lineup suggestions.
- If your league has pitching rules, enter them under Pitching rules.
Game day
Start a game
In Settings, open Game and tap New game. Enter the opponent, choose Juniors (everyone bats) or Seniors (top nine bat), choose whether you field or bat first, and tick who's here today.
Fielding
Tap any position on the diamond to choose a player. The list shows who's on the field and who's on the bench, in number order. Shuffle mixes up positions for the players you choose.
Batting
Hold a row for half a second, then drag it to swap two batters. Sub puts a new player in that spot. In Seniors, a player you sub off goes to the bench with a red cross, and DugOut checks with you before they come back on.
Ending each half
Tap END when your fielding half finishes, and again when your batting half finishes. DugOut uses this to record innings and to know whose pitcher the +1 button is counting.
Pitch counts
Tap the round +1 button in the corner of any screen for each pitch. It counts your pitcher while you're fielding and the opposition's while you're batting. The Pitching tab lets you correct an innings total, change pitcher, add opposition pitchers and log bullpen sessions.
With your league's rules entered, the game summary shows the rest each pitcher needs and when they can pitch again.
Planning on your phone
Open DugOut on your phone and it opens in planning mode. First get your roster from the tablet (see below). Then tap New plan, choose who's available, and tap Suggest, or fill in the grid yourself. Suggestions use position ratings and share bench time; turn Fairness on to take the whole season into account.
Send the plan to the tablet, then on the tablet open Plan and tap Use this plan. Each innings loads onto the board as the game goes.
Moving rosters and plans between devices
On the tablet, the roster is shared from Settings, Teams and players, Share roster to a phone. Plans are shared from the Plan screen. You then have three ways to send it:
- QR code: on the other device tap Scan and point the camera at the code. Large rosters use two or three codes that change on their own. Scanning works in Chrome on Android.
- File: tap Send as file and send it by Bluetooth, Nearby Share, AirDrop, message or email. On the other device tap Scan, then Open a file.
- Text: tap Send as text, message it to yourself, then paste it on the other device.
File and text work on every device, including iPhones.
Best-player votes
In Settings, open Best player votes. Choose 5-4-3-2-1 or 3-2-1, add each voting coach with their own PIN, and mark the head coach. After each game, each coach enters their PIN and votes. Only the head coach's PIN opens the season tally.
Backups and new tablets
In Settings, open Backup and tap Save a backup file. Do this every few weeks and keep the file somewhere safe. To move to a new tablet, install DugOut on it and use Restore from a backup.
If something isn't right
My teams and games have disappeared
This happens if the browser's data for this site was cleared, or DugOut was opened in a different browser or a private tab. Restore your latest backup from Settings, Backup.
I don't see the latest version
Close DugOut completely and open it again. Updates download in the background and apply on the next launch.
The camera won't scan
Use Send as file or Send as text instead. They carry exactly the same information.
